POWER

Running your power conduit can be a pretty simple task if you have the equipment for excavation.  If this is something you are contracting out then go ahead and have the contractor install your conduit for the temp power pole.  This is something the same contractor could do along with your drainage installation.  The power utility will run the wire through conduit and hook up to the transformer.  If power is overhead talk with your electrician and power utility for procedure.  I pulled all my own permits for electrical and wired my house with the help of an uncle and cousin.  My power transformer was across the street.  The first thing I did (after obtaining permits) was looked up the requirements for laying the conduit.  Here is a link to Puget sound energy requirements pse

Look up your utility company and find the requirements on installation.  If you have gas in the street you will be hooking up to then this will be a permit you should have also pulled.  I had to install a propane tank for my gas so this was done separately.  If your power ditch runs past you gas main there is no sense in running another ditch unless for some reason their is a restriction on this.  Check with your utility companies to find out.   The restriction with pse was that the power line had to be 12 inches away from gas line.  Meaning you could not dig a 1 foot trench and install both services.  It would have to have to be at least a two foot trench for the two utilities.  Now my cable box was also across the street so I did run a phone/cable conduit in the same ditch as my power.  I called my cable/phone provider in area and they supplied me with the conduit for there service.  Always check the requirements and specs in your area because they often change.

Next I saw-cut the asphalt across road so I could make a nice repair to street.  I was building on a private street so traffic control and specs were at a minimum.  If you have to cross a large main road this maybe a process worth contracting out.  In my situation I was able to dig half the road at a time.  This made is possible for traffic to pass on one side of the road.  Now my father owns a small excavation company so he did all the digging.  I took pictures of the depth of conduit in multiple spots.  We ran the power conduit and cable conduit from transformer across the street and to location where temporary pole would be located.  Make sure you put your temporary pole where you house panel will be installed.  The line the power company runs for temp power is the same line for you permanent house panel.  It was required to install a 3/8 pull rope through conduit for power company.  Once we had conduits laid we selectively back filled the ditch leaving the two ends open.  I put some cold mix down over the road and compacted the entire ditch.  Its a good idea to let traffic run over it and let the ditch settle before paving.  PSE required me to have sand on site at each open hole.  Next we installed the temp power box with some 2 x 4 and stakes.  Make sure you don't drive any stakes through your drainage pipe or foundation drains.  Now schedule the power company to  pull the wire and hook up your temp power.  Congratulations you now have power onsite.  Hopefully your temporary bathroom has been delivered to your site.
